Idea

To work “in positive characteristic” means to work over a ground ring/field of positive characteristic.

Whereas much of “classical” mathematics took place/takes place over fields of characteristic 0, such as the real numbers and the complex numbers, much of modern mathematics and in particular number theory and arithmetic geometry crucially incorporates also the “exotic” case of positive characteristic, such as finite fields.
